THE AMERICAN MACHINE

THE AMERICAN MACHINE

The Brief: Design a monothematic publication for the text, ‘The Last Days of Detroit: Motor cars, Motown and the Collapse of an Industrial Giant’ by Mark Binelli

The Concept: The publication merges natural and man-made imagery in a design that echoes the style of newspapers and blueprints, reflecting both the decline and regrowth of Detroit. The bold graphic style is also inspired by the American contemporary artist, Barbara Kruger.

Titled The American Machine, the publication connects with the text’s exploration of an industrial city transforming people into machines, as well as twisting the notion of the American Dream into a darker, more foreboding concept. Moreover, the publication’s futuristic and dystopian tone complements its subtitle, Detroit: The City of Tomorrow.

The Outcome: 20 Page A3 Publication
